Read our new people’s parliament report on extremism and hate! We held the People’s Parliament in March 2026, to find out what people think about extremism, radicalisation, and hate in the media

44 people with learning disabilities came to share their views.

Meetra from the Lewisham Refugee and Migrant network spoke to us about the Borough of Sanctuary, and Alex from Prevent spoke to us about radicalisation and extremism.

We ran 3 workshops

  • Radicalisation and Prevent
  • Freedom of speech Vs hate speech
  • Hate in the media

Read the report to find out what people had to say in full, but here are some highlights!

  • Autistic people are often targeted by extremist groups who try to radicalise them. Nobody knows why, but many people felt that it was because autistic people are more likely to be lonely and isolated. People also suggested that extremist groups use people’s trauma from being discriminated to radicalise them.
  • People felt that social media and media companies need to take more responsibility for hateful and extremist content.
  • Most people said that there are certain words and phrases (such as slurs) that are always offensive and shouldn’t be used in any context.

Our next People’s Parliament will be on the 5th June, 10.30 – 3.00 at the Catford Civic Suite, where we will talk about Social Care. Open to all people with learning disabilities living in Lewisham borough. Contact ellie@lsup.org.uk for more information.
