Parent’s Rights – Our New Advocacy Project

Gemma Hughes Parents Advocate

Say hi to Gemma, our new 1-2-1 advocate for parents with a learning disability.

We know that being a parent with a learning disability can be tough. We want to help parents understand their rights. Our project is there to help parents navigate the system, understand what is happening and get their voice heard. Everyone has the right to a family life.

We believe that people with learning disabilities have the right to get support to be good parents.

Whether it’s finding out about a pregnancy, issues with a child you already have or social services concerns, we are here to help.

We can help with:

  • Understanding your rights
  • Saying what you want to say
  • Understanding documents and reports
  • Preparing for and going to meetings, conferences and court hearings
  • Meeting up with other parents with learning disabilities

Gemma says ‘Hello to all parents. I am excited about joining Lewisham Speaking Up and having the opportunity to offer this support. I believe in rights for all people to express how they feel about their lives and to have a voice in all decisions made about their families.

I am available to discuss any issues that you may have, no matter how big or small. I look forward to working with you.’
