Read the latest Lewisham People’s Parliament report on Mental Health
Read our new people’s parliament report on Mental Health! In June 2025, we held a People’s Parliament about mental health. We talked about mental health services, medication, suicidal thoughts and long-stay hospitals.

48 people with learning disabilities came to share their views.
Julie, Lauren and Louise from the South London and Maudsley (SLAM) mental health and learning disability team came to speak to us.
We also watched a video by My Life My Choice about their Don’t Lock Us Away campaign.
We ran 3 workshops
- Accessing mainstream mental health services
- mental health medication
- suicidal thoughts
Read the report to find out what people had to say in full, but here are some highlights!
- People with learning disabilities feel that there isn’t enough support available to them for mental health issues, but they believe it’s important to talk about these problems and support each other.
- Mental health services are not meeting the needs of people with learning disabilities, who face challenges in getting referrals, long wait times that worsen their condition, and a lack of support until their situation becomes an emergency.
- When people with learning disabilities do receive support, they often don’t feel listened to. People said that services don’t understand their needs or give them enough time to recover.
- To improve care, people with learning disabilities need to be more involved in their treatment plans, have access to easy-to-understand information, and be given time and compassion to share their experiences.
Our next People’s Parliament will be on the 19th September, 10.30 – 3.00 at the Catford Civic Suite, where we will talk about Transport. Open to all people with learning disabilities living in Lewisham borough. Contact ellie@lsup.org.uk for more information.
