49 people with learning disabilities came to share their views.
Gary Bourlet from Learning Disability England came to talk about the Good Lives Framework. We also watched a video by Social Care Future about the Casey Commission.
We ran 3 workshops
- What does good support look like?
- What do we need when things go wrong?
- Activities and community
Ben Mant from Lewisham Safeguarding Adults Board supported the workshops, particularly the second one.
Read the report to find out what people had to say in full, but here are some highlights!
- Support staff should stay consistent where possible, be well trained and paid better. This helps them build good relationships with people they support. People with learning disabilities should have a say in who is hired to support them
- People don’t feel listened to when they complain. It feels like services protect each other and put their own needs first
- It is disappointing that abuse still happens so much in social care settings. It has been 15 years since the Panorama on Winterbourne View, and it feels like no one has learned any lessons
- People should get support to be part of their communities. This means fitting staff shifts around the person’s needs.
Our next People’s Parliament will be on Friday 18th September, 10:30 – 3:30 at the Catford Civic Suite. We will talk about creativity and communication, with artists from Entelechy Arts.
